Girl has unhappy Christmas after iPod prank

A girl in the US had a rather unhappy Christmas after opening up the packaging of her new iPod to find there was no music player inside.

Instead of the portable entertainment device, the youngster from Maryland was greeted by the sight of a strange note proclaiming that she should "reclaim her mind from the media's shackles".

According to reports, the girl's father returned the packaging, along with the note, to the store he purchased it from, only to be told that another customer had suffered the same misfortune.

However, it is still unclear if this strange kind of Christmas cheer originated from the retailer or the iPod manufacturer Apple.

The news of the unhappy Christmas has come after it was claimed in reports that Apple are set to tie up a major deal with Fox to bring more film content to the music device.

It is believed the new deal, which is reportedly close to being completed, will allow iTunes users the chance to download rental copies of new releases for a short period of time.

iPod manufacturer to join forces with movie company?

iPod manufacturer Apple is thought to be close to signing up to a revolutionary deal with one of the world's biggest movie companies.

Rumours have been circulating on the internet that the company's deal with Twentieth Century Fox will allow iTunes users the chance to download rental copies of new releases from the film company.

Under the system, customers would be able to download the films through the software but only view them for a certain amount of time.

It is thought that the first major announcement on the deal could also take place at Macworld Expo next month, making Fox the first studio since Disney to allow iPod owners to legally download content.

The news of the imminent deal has come after iSkysoft recently launched software which allows Mac users to convert their favourite DVDs into video files for playback on the portable entertainment player.

It thought that the software retails for £14.

New iPod compatible photo frame unveiled

iPod accessories manufacturer Mustek has unveiled a new digital photo frame which is compatible with the portable entertainment player.

The company's PF-i700 allows people to show off their favourite pictures stored on their iPod, as well as allowing them to listen to tunes through the accessory's integrated stereo speakers.

iLounge reports that the seven-inch frame also features USB connectivity, meaning users can simply upload their favourite photos directly for their PC or memory sticks.

Speaking to the website about the new device, Mustek's national sales and marketing manager, David Ficken, said: "For years consumers have stored their music libraries on iPods and now they’re saving their favourite photos, TV shows, video clips and movies there, too."

The release of the device, which retails for $130 (£65), has come after a private hospital announced it was offering pregnant women the chance to download scans of their unborn children on to their iPod.

It is thought that the service will cost between £140 and £360.

iPod to protect users' ears?

A new patent has been revealed that suggests that iPod manufacturer Apple is creating a system to protect users of the music player from long-term hearing problems.

It has been reported in two major UK newspapers that future versions of the device could have an automatic volume control which will reduce the sound levels on the music player if someone uses it for a prolonged period.

The move has apparently been made after statistics revealed that the highest volume setting of an iPod iPod is as loud as chainsaw.

Commenting on the issue, the patent states: "Since the damaging effect on users' hearing is both gradual and cumulative, even those users who are concerned about hearing loss may not behave in a manner that would limit or minimise such damaging effects."

The release of the patent information has come several weeks after another blueprint was discovered that suggested an improvement on the iPod's gaming facilities.

Filed back in September 2006, the patent features a design which is described as being created specifically for a gaming application on the device.

New iPod nano cases launched

Two new case designs for the iPod nano have been launched by accessories manufacturer Proporta.

Featuring an internal mirror, the aptly-titled Shine design features a flip-up cover to protect the device's face and a number of cut-outs for easy access to the music player's controls.

According to iLounge, the case, which retails for around $40 (£20), also includes a removable lanyard so users have a couple of options as to how they carry their nanos.

The website also reports that Proporta's other case, the Mini Mod Alu-Leather, features a thin layer of aluminium to further protect the iPod nano from general wear and tear.

Retailing for about $46 (£23), the case also features easy access to the device's controls so users can benefit from ease of use and sturdier protection in one package.

The release of new cases for the iPod nano has come after a rival accessories manufacturer released new protective covers for the iPod touch.

Tunewear's leather Prie Ambassador, which features an open-face design, retails for $59.95 (£30).

iPod to become ultimate accessory for pregnant women?

The iPod could be set to become the ultimate accessory for prospective parents wanting to show off scans of their unborn children to friends and family.

Portland Hospital in London is offering pregnant women the chance to download high definition ultrasound pictures of their babies onto their portable music player so they can easily enjoy carrying around photos of their offspring.

The new pictures are formed by using "4D" technology which uses multiple beams to create depth in the imaging, meaning parents get a fully rounded picture of their unborn child.

However, proud parents will have to pay a lot for the privilege of the new pictures, with the scans expected to cost between £140 and £360.

More and more organisations and companies are beginning to embrace the multimedia uses of the newer models of the iPod.

A number of games have been released to be played on the music device, while US-based software developers recently launched new software which allows iPod users to listen to their PC's music content via the player's wireless internet capabilities.

Another game launched for iPod

Another new game designed for use on the iPod has been made available through online music store iTunes.

PopCap Games' Peggle features 55 levels and 75 challenges for owners of the portable music player to test themselves while listening to their favourite tunes.

The game was originally launched on the internet and was downloaded more than ten million times, leading the games manufacturer to speed up the development of the iPod version.

Commenting on the release, PopCap co-founder said: "The clickwheel input of the iPod is a natural fit for controlling Peggle, so we knew this adaptation of the game would be amazing.

"And with the Duel Mode included, two players can pass the iPod back and forth while battling their way to Extreme Fever!"

The release of Peggle for the iPod has come a day after Sega revealed that a Sonic the Hedgehog game has been created for the portable player.

Available to download via iTunes, the platform game is priced at $4.99 (£2.50) and features gameplay and graphics similar to the game's look in its heyday on the Megadrive.

Animal activists voice concerns over iPod fish tank

Animal activists in Australia have voiced their concerns over a "fishy" new iPod accessory available in the country.

The iPond, which doubles as both a fish tank and a speaker system for the music player, is causing worry owing to the fact it is 15 times smaller than the recommended tank size for a fish.

However, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that the accessory is a hit with people down under, with outlets in the city reporting major sales of the $70 (£30) product.

Talking to the newspaper about the device, Animal Liberation Victoria's Noah Mark said: "The fish in this thing does not look like it has very long to live and it can barely move.

"Even if it does live it's not [a] life worth living ... it's really just a torture box."

The iPond is one of many bizarre new iPod speaker accessories to be released recently.

Groovemaster recently unveiled a new bag featuring an in-built speaker system, meaning users would no longer have to carry around portable speakers to listen to their favourite songs on the move.

Software developer launches innovative programme for iPod touch

A US-based software developer has launched a new innovative programme which enables iPod touch owners unlimited access to their computer's music library.

Orb Network's new self-titled system allows users of the portable music device the chance to listen to any of the music on their PC via a wireless internet connection, meaning music fans no longer have to choose what songs to store on their iPods.

The company has urged music lovers to head to their website and download the new application free of charge for use in conjunction with the Safari browser on the iPod touch.

Orb Networks' chief executive Joe Costello said: "What kind of robot always decides ahead-of-time what songs they're going to be in the mood for when they're away from their PC? Don't sync some. Stream all."

Recent research by iTunes Europe revealed the songs that iPod touch users are most likely to use with the new programme.

The music library revealed that Amy Winehouse and Mika were the most popular artists in its UK store over the past year, with the two artists having the biggest album and single sales respectively.

iPod 'could become holdall for the world's data'

The entire content of the world's data could fit on a single iPod sooner than a lot of people think, according to Google.

Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, the company's Asia Pacific and Latin America Operations vice-president, stated that if the huge drops in the price of data storage that have occurred since 1982 continue, the possibility could become a reality.

Talking at a major conference in Singapore, Ms Cassidy added that if gas prices fell by the same amount, a gallon of gas would take an individual around the Earth 2,200 times.

She added that the growth could even render the CD format unnecessary in the next eight years.

"If this trend continues, and the cost of storage continues to decrease, we estimate that somewhere around 2020, all the world's content will fit inside an iPod, and all the world's music would sit in your palm as early as 2015," she explained.

Comments on the future of music on the iPod have come after iTunes Europe revealed that Amy Winehouse and Mika had the biggest selling album and single of the year respectively through the music store.

iPod gaming on the cards?

The discovery of a patent filed by Apple last year has led some experts to suggest that the iPod manufacturer is considering bringing more games to the device.

Filed in September 2006, the wording of the patent is believed to suggest that the design will be used specifically for "a game or gaming application", leading several commentators on the web to believe it could be a new feature for the iPod touch.

Engadget has reported that the patent would allow users to play games on a touchscreen device while simultaneously letting users control other applications.

The website also documented Apple's statement that "the invention allows various applications to be integrated and used on devices that are not readily suitable for supporting multiple applications at the same time".

Gaming on the iPod nano 3G, classic and touch versions of the music player is becoming increasingly popular.

In the past month, Guitar Hero makers Harmonix released a game for the portable device, while Gameloft has also unveiled a brain training game.

Both of the new games are available through iTunes.

King Kong star reveals his love for the iPod

King Kong star Andy Serkis has revealed that his iPod touch is his favourite piece of technology.

In an interview with the Guardian, the star, who also played Gollum in the epic Lord of the Rings series, revealed that he used his device to look at photos of locations for proposed film shoots.

However, despite revealing his love for iPods, he added that there are some changes he would make to the device if given the opportunity.

"At the moment – and maybe this is because I've only just started using it – I'm struggling to download QuickTime movies onto it," he explained to the newspaper.

"Maybe that's just the way I'm doing it, maybe it's because I've only just got it. I know you can store video onto it but I'd make that easier."

In other film-related iPod news, iSkysoft recently launched software that allows Mac users to convert their favourite DVDs into video files compatible with video-enabled versions of the music player.
