Apple to go greener
Apple has announced plans to become more environmentally conscious, gradually eliminating toxic substances from the manufacturing components it uses to create iPods and other devices.
The group has included a new A Greener Apple logo on its main webpage.
Steve Jobs, chief executive officer of iPod Apple, said: "We tend to talk about the things we have just accomplished but that this policy didn't work with green issues and left both shareholders and customers in the dark.
"Today we're changing our policy."
He added that the group is committed to implementing environmentally-friendly manufacturing methods in the next year, including abolishing its use of arsenic in displays and, eventually, its use of mercury.
Greenpeace has welcomed the announcement, stating that it looks forward to working with the greener Apple and to "the greening of the entire electronics industry".
It also praised the group's initiative in the US, where customers can return their old Apple products for recycling.
