September is going to be a good month for crisp-eating music fans (a sizeable portion of the populous, one would imagine).

Because every five minutes (count 'em) Walkers Crisps will be giving away a free iPod mini until the end of September.

Draws will take place from 00:05 on 1st September until midnight on 30th September.

Most varieties of Walkers will be included in the competition and each packet will carry a unique code, which crisp-eaters can email or text to Walkers in the hope of winning a brand new iPod mini.

The competition is open to residents of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, but fear not if you haven't won anything by the end of September.

Walkers will also giving away free iPod minis at midnight every night throughout October and November.

iPod quarter sales due to hit 7million

A leading American technology market analyst has predicted record quarter-sales for Apple’s iPod.

Shaw Wu believes Apple will sell 7.1 million iPods in the current quarter, according to Macworld UK.

With figures up 15 per cent, quarter-on-quarter, Mr Wu has warned that average recommended retail prices may come under “greater than expected pressure”.

In a memo to clients obtained by the Apple news website, Mr Wu told clients: “We have noticed very aggressive pricing, particularly on the 4GB iPod minis,” he said.

“We believe part of the reason is that iPod inventories remain relatively high on an absolute basis and this aggressive promotion is to ensure sales in an otherwise slower consumer period.”

OFT in 'free iPod' crackdown

The number's up for an 'unlawful' iPod lottery which promised mobile phone customers a free iPod music player and other gifts if they purchased a certain amount of CDs and ringtones.

According to reports from Mac World news, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) closed down a scheme operated by Mobiles4all.

The OFT explains: "Participants who bought the product were added to a waiting list for their chosen 'free gift', and told that it would be sent to them after they reached the top of the list.

"However, for each free gift to be dispatched, a set number of new recruits had to join the scheme (usually around 30, although the number varied according to the value of the 'free gift' that was chosen).

The industry regulator called such schemes "unlawful" and Mac World warned that "the grim reality of such scheme is one in which the number of people waiting for their free gadget would always 'far exceed' the number of gifts sent out".

iTunes/iPod combo is the best on the market

A leading US technology journalist has hailed Apple's iPod/iTunes digital music combo as the best offering on the market.

Smartmoney.com columnist Walter Mossberg compared online music services offering subscription-based rental options for music with iTunes' pay-as-you-go service and concluded that the rental model was "nowhere as popular as iTunes."

"Right now, iTunes and the iPod are the better choice in digital music.

He offers a number of explanations to back up his claims: "The rental model is far more complicated and restrictive than iTunes and has several big downsides," he writes.

One of the main difficulties with subscription services identified by Mr Mossberg is their incompatibility with the MP3 market leader – the iPod.

"So rental users are stuck with inferior portable players that don't sell as well and thus don't attract the huge number of accessories available for the iPod," he said.

Power up with SoundUP

SoundUP is a new iPod accessory from Targus that enhances sound output from your favourite MP3 player.

According to the company press release, SoundUP "separates and reprocesses digital music files providing a three-dimensional sound envelope" to deliver "the rich tones and spatial orientation of live music".

With its High Definition Sound Enhancer, SoundUP really allows users to power up on their iPod's audio capabilities, as Targus explains.

"Portable audio is great – but the technology that allows you to carry 10,000+ songs in your pocket utilises compressed audio formats.

"And these compressed formats means a loss of audio content and quality."

"SoundUP uses Phantom Technologies patented circuit that provides 20-25 per cent more music envelope – revealing instruments and voices from original recordings that are trapped during compression and previously not heard."

iPod icon can't afford one

She has come to symbolise the defining cultural product of the new millennium, but Mandy Coulton still can't afford an iPod.

Ms Coulton was the dancer whose bikini-clad silhouette helped Apple shift millions of iPods, but in a recent interview with the New York Post, she admitted she still can't afford to buy one.

The Los-Angeles based part-time model and dancer said she was paid $1,500 (£836) to pose for the advertising campaign.

"At the time, $1,500 seemed like a lot of money. But now my picture is everywhere," she told the New York Post.

"I would like one – but $400 (£220) for an iPod is just too much for me.

"I can't justify spending that much money when I have day-to-day stuff to pay for, like the car and the rent."

She is currently working part-time as a nanny while she waits to hit the big time.

Moped + iPod = Mopah

An American design student has created the Mopah – an iPod inspired moped.

Or to describe it more accurately, an iPod-powered scooter that operates by reading the unique serial number from your Apple MP3 player.

Constructed from foam, fibreglass, aluminium, steel and bamboo, the Mopah runs on a 500-watt motor and two 12-volt batteries.

"Mopah isn't about creating a beauty queen, it's more of a personal exploration in what it takes to make an idea real," said designer Michael Tseng.

He continues: "The essence of the scooter is that it's not just a motorized bike with speakers, instead it's a mobile boom-box.

"It's an outlet to freedom beyond mere transportation, a way of unlocking the limitless possibilities we have in life."

Columnist thinks iPod is a bad Apple

A US journalist has taken a sensational swipe at Apple's key products: the iPod and iTunes.

Jim Turley, a columnist with the Electronic Engineering Times called the iPod a mere "hard disk with a play button" while berating the content management facilities on iTunes.

"What's the big deal? I've had MP3 players before and I think they're terrific, but the iPod, frankly, is inferior to all of them," he sniped

He describes the enormous popularity of the iPod as proof that " we have entered the age where high-tech electronics are sold based on the colour of the plastic".

Mr Turley then went on to call the "much vaunted" iTunes software "absolutely appalling", whilst listing his pet Apple hates.

iTunes sales soar

Online music sales on Apple iTunes are set to reach 1.365 billion by the end of next year, according to analyst predictions.

The forecast, by US investment firm Piper Jaffray, is 55 per cent higher than previous estimates.

Analyst Gene Muster told the Metro newspaper: "Apple is averaging 6.1 iTunes downloads per iPod.

"If we apply this ratio to our cumulative iPod base estimates through 2006, iTunes downloads for 2006 would be 1.365 billion."

Since its launch over two years ago, iTunes has sold more than 500 million songs worldwide.

It's quite simple in design – no zips, no diamonds, no logos – just an eye-catching gold embossed design.

So if you feel like your iPod is a star, maybe its time to let it shine?

Microsoft takes a bite of iPod's Apple

Apple may be forced to pay its bitter rival Microsoft £6 for each iPod sold because of a major licensing oversight.

Microsoft patented the technology behind the iconic MP3 player a full two months before Apple.

As a result, the US Patent Office has ruled that Microsoft has the right to charge competitors a licence fee for each iPod sold.

Apple are set to appeal the decision, but may be forced to pay up in the meantime.

David Kaefer, Microsoft's director of intellectual property licensing, said: "In general, our policy is to allow others to license our patents so they can use our innovative methods in their products.

"Microsoft and Apple have previously licensed their respective patent portfolios to one another and we maintain a good working relationship with Apple."

Use your iPod to keep on track

If you are planning a trip abroad a colour iPod could stop you getting lost by providing you with a local subway map.

The free maps can be downloaded via www.ipodsubwaymaps.com and could prove vital when trying to navigate a complicated foreign transport system. Although the maps available so far are largely US-based, there are plans to provide more international guides, including London and Paris.

The process of putting the maps on the iPod is relatively simple using either iPhoto or Adobe Photoshop Album.

Ipodsubwaymaps' creator William Bright is hoping that the site will eventually offer A-Z style street maps and also allow people to upload their own map creations.

Doom on your iPod

The popular computer shoot-em-up game Doom is now available on your iPod.

Developers at iPod Linux have created a way of playing the game on the iPod Photo; however it may not be quite the fast-pacing game seen on the PC – with a frame rate of just three to four a second.

The front controls of the iPod allow you to explore and shot the virtual world, with rewind and fast-forward you can move left and right, whilst the Menu button will move you forward and the play allows you to shoot.

The version also enables players to save their progress and resume their game at a later stage.

iPod Linux developer 'Kyle' has been working on the conversion for a while and believes that the iPod 's ability to run Linux could mean more games will soon be available to users.

"There's a lot of begging for things like video support, games, and support for more audio types on iPods", he added.

"Linux brings these features to the iPod and the community."

5th Gen iPod details emerge

Details of the much anticipated 5th generation iPod are starting to emerge.

The new version of the popular device is likely to feature a range of new Apple-specific features when it hits the shelves later this year.

Kasper Jade from AppleInsider, believes that Apple are increasingly concerned that other players are cashing in on their success and that a more in-house design style will be adopted.

Mr Jade added: "Sources say that iPod engineers have increased their efforts not only on broadening the line of digital music players, but also on reducing component outsourcing to maintain tighter control of the company's intellectual property."

It is likely that the new iPod will feature an all new navigational system as well as a specifically Apple designed scroll-wheel, however, the price tag is still expected to remain attractive to consumers

Rumours also suggest that the 5th Gen model will offer user-replaceable batteries – something that will appeal to those frustrated by the low battery life of previous iPods.

HP halt iPod sales

Global technology giants, Hewlett-Packard (HP), have decided to abandon their iPod resale scheme as of this September.

HP spokesman Ross Camp told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) "the iPod doesn’t fit in with our digital entertainment strategy".

However, he did tell CNET News.com that HP would continue to include Apple's iTunes on its desktop and notebook computers.

The HP/Apple parting is thought to be an amicable one, though the partnership between the two tech giants was not as fruitful as either party would have liked.

"HP on average accounted for only about five per cent of iPod sales, which totalled about 6.2 million of the devices, worth more than $1.1 billion in revenue, for Apple last quarter," the WSJ explained.

Under the terms of the partnership with Apple, HP cannot develop or market a rival digital music player until August 2006.
