iTunes phone out next month

The eagerly-awaited iTunes phone will be premiered next month at the V Festival in Hylands Park, Staffordshire, according to industry reports.

The two-day, four-stage musical event is one of the biggest in the festival calender and will be sponsored by Virgin Mobile - which has been flagged as one of the first mobile networks to offer the phone.

Citing a report from leading American technology analyst, Albert Lin, thestreet.com reports that "the iPod-inspired music phone – which Motorola pulled twice from introductions earlier this year, apparently under orders from Apple chief Steve Jobs – will debut in the UK next month."

However, a Virgin Mobile representative denied the reports saying "there is no confirmation of when this phone will be launched" and Motorola press officers declined to comment.

But during Motorola's analyst day presentations this week, CEO Ed Zander confirmed that the iTunes phone would be availble by the end of this quarter.

Virgin Mobile's four million UK subscribers will have first access to the Motorola GSM iTune's phone, dubbed the Rokr.

October release for colour iPod mini?

A leading US technology analyst has predicted the imminent release of a colour screen iPod mini.

Shaw Wu believes that Apple will release a 2GB colour iPod mini as soon as October.

He also believes that this updated iPod mini will feature new flash-based chip designs, as opposed to HDD.

The prediction is based on data from iPod chip supplier PortalPlayer. In an announcement, president and CEO of PortalPlayer, Gary Johnson, said: "We have completed the design win activity for our customers – exciting new models intend to ship in the second half of 2005".

Mr Wu's forecasts also stems from the fact that Apple have previously launched new products around the same time to cash in on the pre-Christmas buzz.

iPods get hallucination health warning

Despite a spate of positive news, it looks like the iPod-naysayer brigade is back at work.

A psychiatric expert has warned that excessive iPod use could cause serious psychological disturbances.

Research by Dr Victor Aziz of Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff has found that people who listen to a lot of music through their iPod can suffer 'musical hallucinations', where a song plays constantly in one's head.

"People find they can't eat and can't think properly," Dr Aziz told reporters for the Evening Standard.

Dr Aziz, whose findings are published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry this week said: "Having a song in your head every now and then is quite normal but musical hallucinations can be quite distressing."

It appears the iPod has been named as one of the main agents of this phenomenon solely because of its popularity. Users of other audio devices, such as other MP3 players, radios, televisions and stereos, are equally at risk.

Porn podcasts could cause trouble for iTunes

Apple are under scrutiny from industry watchdogs following reports that several adult-orientated podcasts can be found on the iTunes directory.

According to an article published in the Wall Street Journal, the podcasts, also known as “porncasts” contain “raunchy sex banter, erotic storytelling and reviews of pornographic websites”.

Analysts say that the emergence of such content was inevitable, but Apple needs to be careful not to damage the company’s image with such material.

“Apple needs to be careful to protect its brand here,” commented Ted Schadler of Forrester Research. “The editorial function is just getting more and more important.”

Apple refused to say whether it has received any complaints, particularly as there are no age restrictions on iTunes downloads.

But according to the WSJ report “the company said it could potentially pull programs that it deems too explicit, but declined to say whether it has done so yet.”

It’s not all-white for iPod users

A new poll of iPod users has revealed the surprising extent to which fear of crime affects people’s usage and enjoyment of the iconic MP3 player.

According to an online survey conducted by Macworld UK, large numbers have ditched their white Apple headphones for fear of drawing attention to their most-wanted machine.

In fact, the poll of 2,068 iPod users revealed that only 57 per cent actually wore their white iPod headphones.

The research also revealed that because of crime fears, 81 per cent of respondents said they never take their iPod outside their house.

Commenting on the poll, a Macworld website visitor said: “We shouldn't get paranoid but we have to consider this: Showing off your iPod could be like walking around with a wad of bank notes, soon or later you may end up getting mugged.”

Bomb blast victim saved by iPod

Less than a month ago, iPods became the latest folk devils after a scientist branded them a potential health risk to listeners because of its vast volume capacity.

But this week, iPod headphones have been given the medical seal of approval after reports that they actually prevented someone from going deaf.

Design manager Tad Gryglewicz, a 52-year old civil engineer from North London was on board the number 30 bus that exploded in Tavistock Square, London last week killing 13 people.

According to a report in the Independent newspaper, Mr Gryglewicz was told by doctors that his hearing was saved by his iPod earbuds.

He was treated at the scene by a female doctor from the British Medical Association whose headquarters were next to the bus bomb.

He told reporters: “I was bleeding heavily, so without her help it could have been very serious for me. Last night I went into theatre to have my wounds cleaned. There were bits of bus in me. It was a miracle I was not more badly injured considering how close I was to the explosion. The help I received from people was extraordinary.”

A total of 52 people died after four bombs rocked London’s transport system in the worst ever terror attacks on the city.
